Infinitives are the full form of the verb. In English, the infinitive is made up of two words.
To talk Parler (parleh)
To dance danser (danseh)
To love, lke aimer (emeh)
There are regular infinitives and irregular infinitives.
Two very important irregular verbs in French are Être- to be, and Avoir- to have
They must be memorized.
Être- to be (ehtre)
Je suis- I am (je swee) nous sommes- we are (nu somme)
Tu es- you are (tu e) vous êtes- you (all ) are (vuzette)
Il, elle, on est- he, she, one is Ils, elles sont- they (men/women are) (sohn)
· Note that vous êtes has a liaison; that is when the final consonant of a word that is usually not pronounced is pronounced as the letter ‘z’ because of the vowel that follows.The line is just for illustration.
Avoir- to have (pronounce avwar)
J’ai – I have ( jai) nous avons- we have (nuzavon)
Tu as – you have vous avez- you (all) have (vuzave)
Il, elle, on a- he, she, one has ils, elles ont- they have (ilzont) (ellezohnt)
